Maofeng «Furry Peaks»

Maofeng (毛峰)

An easy-to-brew green tea from Yunnan Province, ideal for everyday enjoyment.

Maofeng (毛峰), meaning “Furry Peaks,” is one of China’s most celebrated green teas. Its name refers to the fine white hairs covering the young buds and to the pointed shape of the leaves, which resemble mountain peaks. Today, Maofeng also describes a style of tea production in which one bud and the two adjacent young leaves are carefully harvested. This processing method is used for several Chinese tea varieties and produces teas with a balanced and refined character.

The original home of Maofeng is Huangshan (“Yellow Mountain”) in southern Anhui Province. Revered as one of China’s most beautiful mountain landscapes, Huangshan provides an ideal environment for tea cultivation thanks to its mild, humid climate and frequent mountain mists.

Harvesting begins during the Qingming Festival in early April and continues until early June. Tea pickers start work before sunrise, carefully selecting only the finest buds and tender young leaves while discarding damaged or frost-affected ones.

Maofeng is often called “a one-day tea” because the freshly harvested leaves are sorted and withered immediately after picking so that the entire production process can be completed before nightfall.
